CSIRO scientist JIM PEACOCK will lead the Australian Academy of Science for the nextfour years after his election today.

Dr PEACOCK, of CSIRO Plant Industry, won the Prime Minister's Prize for Science in2000 and is a foreign associate of the US National Academy of Sciences.

He was once a professor at the University of California and Stanford University, andhis principal research areas include molecular plant science, gene technology and modernagriculture.

Dr PEACOCK says immediate challenges include the higher education review and the settingof national research priorities.

CSIRO chief executive GEOFF GARRETT says Dr PEACOCK has led and maintained CSIRO PlantIndustry as one of the world's leading bodies in plant molecular biology.
