SA: Former WTO chief to lead new think tank

ADELAIDE, Dec 6 AAP - A former deputy director-general of the World Trade Organisation,Andrew Stoler, is to head up Adelaide University's new think tank which aims to boostSouth Australia's business expertise.

The South Australian government and the university will spend $3 million over the nextfour years to fund the Institute of International Business, Economics and Law.

It starts operating next month to support those who work in today's global economyin business, government or academia.

It aims to provide research and teaching in international trade, business investment,economics and marketing through postgraduate programs and other courses.

It will also provide an expert consultancy service to the public and private sectorsand build relations with state and commonwealth governments, the World Bank, the AsianDevelopment Bank and the World Trade Organisation.

Mr Stoler has extensive experience in international trade and has served in key roleswith the United States government since the 1970s dealing with foreign and domestic tradeissues.

Adelaide University vice chancellor James McWha said Mr Stoler and the new institutewould foster closer links between the university, government, business and the community.

"Importantly, it is one more reason for students to make Adelaide their first choicefor study," Professor McWha said.
